Warmer Weather Brings Water Changes

Water conservation is an important responsibility for everyone.    During the summer, the amount of water that cities pump, treat and distribute to citizens can triple because of irrigation.  Oftentimes, our grass doesn’t need as much water as we put on.

In the attached article, the Carver County Water Management Department provides valuable information regarding water use and conservation.

Keep Our Waters Clean!

If you live near a storm drain, then you live on waterfront property!

Did you know that the rainwater that falls on your property ends up in nearby lakes, rivers and ponds?  Grass clippings, pet waste, lawn fertilizers, leaves and seeds wash into storm drains and end up in creeks or stormwater ponds.   These items all contain phosphorus, and excess phosphorus causes lakes, creeks and wetlands to turn green with algae.

As citizens, here are some things you can do to keep pollutants out of lakes, rivers and ponds:

  • Keep the pavement clean.  Sweep up grass clippings and spills from driveways, sidewalks, and streets.
  • Remove leaves from the street.  Rake leaves, seeds, and grass clippings out of the street and gutter.  Compost on site or bag and take to a compost drop off.
  • Be a responsible pet owner and scoop the poop!  Pet waste contains phosphorus and harmful bacteria.
  • Phosphorus binds very strongly to soil, so prevent erosion and keep soil from washing into the street.
  • Fertilize your lawn, not the creek.  Most lawns are naturally high in phosphorus and will remain healthy without adding more, so choose a zero-phosphorus fertilizer.  Sweep spilled fertilizer off paved surfaces.

The City of Carver is issuing the results of monitoring done on its drinking water for the period from January 1 to December 31, 2016.  The purpose of this report is to advance consumers’ understanding of drinking water and heighten awareness of the need to protect precious water resources.

Source of Water

The City of Carver provides drinking water to its residents from a groundwater source:  four wells ranging from 470 to 738 feet deep, that draw water from the Mt. Simon, Tunnel City-Eau Claire, and Tunnel City-Wonewoc aquifers.

The Minnesota Department of Health has made a determination as to how vulnerable our systems’ source(s) of water may be to future contamination incidents.  If you wish to obtain the entire source water assessment regarding your drinking water, please call 651-201-4700 or 1-800-818-9318 (and press 5) during normal business hours.  Also, you can view it on line at www.health.state.mn.us/divs/eh/water/swp/swa.

Minnesota Severe Weather Awareness Week is April 17-21, 2017

Each year, Carver County, sponsors Severe Weather Awareness Week in collaboration with the National Weather Service and the MN Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.

According to the National Weather Service, Minnesota experiences an average of 40 tornadoes per year. In 2012, 37 twisters touched down. A record was set in 2010 with 104 tornadoes across the state.

Understanding this threat and knowing what to do when a tornado is approaching can save lives.

Please see the attached document for more information on how we can prepare and practice in our communities for the coming severe weather season.

Public Service Announcement

A message from Deputy McKirahan……As warmer weather approaches, the Carver County Sheriff’s Office reminds residents to safeguard their vehicles from theft.   To reduce temptations from those out looking to steal items, all electronics and valuable items should be removed from your vehicle.   Be sure to lock all vehicle doors as well as side garage doors at all times; the majority of vehicle thefts are the result of vehicles being left unlocked.   If you have any questions, please contact Deputy McKirahan or the Carver County Sheriff’s Office.
