Parks Commission – 2 Open Positions

This commission acts as an advisory body to the City Council concerning recreation areas, facilities, services, and programs. In addition, they are concerned with the overall management of park and trail systems. They meet on the second Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at City Council Chambers.

Building Inspector

The City of Carver (population 4,473) is seeking applications for the position of Building Inspector to join a creative and friendly team.  The City is looking for a self-motivated individual to work with the Community Development Department to ensure compliance with State and local regulations.

General Duties:

The Building Inspector will be responsible for reviewing construction plans, perform inspections, investigating complaints related to code violations, and assisting the building official as needed. The building inspector should be able to apply working knowledge of all state construction codes and city ordinance to ensure code compliance.

Minimum Requirements:

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Completion of one post-secondary technical course in building, mechanical, and/or plumbing inspection.
• Certification through the Department of Labor and Industry as a building official limited or ability to obtain with six months of employment.
• Valid Minnesota driver’s license with a good driving record.

Congratulations to the Carver Fire Relief Association, recipients of the 2018 Community Service Award.  The Carver City Council recognized the Carver Fire Relief Association for their time, support, and services that they have shared to truly make a difference in the City of Carver.  Their contributions to the community include hosting of the annual Open House and Bike Rodeo events, their volunteerism at all the local community events, and their efforts to lead fire prevention talks with the local schools.

Many times, flooding along the Minnesota River can be predicted up to a week in advance, giving ample warning to prepare for a potential flood event.  However, in the event of localized flooding due to a large rain event, plugged storm sewer drain, and storm ponds overflowing, the following tips will help protect you and your family in either type of flooding event:

• Reduce the risk of damage from flooding by elevating critical utilities, such as electrical panels, switches, sockets, wiring, appliances, and heating systems.
• In areas with repetitive flooding, consider elevating the entire structure.
• Make sure basements are waterproofed and your sump pump is working.  Then, install a battery-operated backup in case of power failure.
• Installing a water alarm will also let you know if water is accumulating in your basement.
• Clear debris from gutters and downspouts.
• Anchor any fuel tanks.
• Move furniture, valuables, and important documents to a safe place.
• Store copies of irreplaceable documents (such as birth certificates, passports, etc.) in a safe, dry place.  Keep originals in a safe deposit box.
• Build an emergency supply kit:  Food, bottled water, first aid supplies, medicines, and a battery-operated radio should be ready to go when you need them.  Visit www.ready.gov for a complete disaster supply checklist.
• Plan and practice a flood evacuation route.  Ask someone out of state to be your “family contact” in an emergency, and make sure everyone knows the contact’s address and phone number.
• Make a pet plan.  Many shelters do not allow pets.  Make plans now on what to do with your pets if you are required to evacuate your residence.

Project Overview

The City of Carver is making improvements to the storm water systems along Jonathan Carver Parkway (Area 1) and along Main Street to Riverside Park (Area 2).

Area 1

New storm sewer pipe will be installed along Jonathan Carver Parkway connecting two existing storm sewer systems. This connection is being constructed to accommodate the new development being built to the west of Jonathan Carver Parkway. Construction is anticipated to begin in December 2018 and will be completed in spring of 2019.

Area 2

Downtown area improvements will include making connections to existing mains along Main Street (near Riverside Park) and replacing an existing lift station at the entrance of Riverside Park. These improvements will help increase efficiency of the system during large rain events.

Traffic Impacts

During construction, minimal traffic impacts will occur. Short term spot lane or road closures may occur in specific areas as needed. Access to adjacent properties will be maintained to the extent practical and specific arrangements will be made for any short-term closures needed.

With the colder temperatures in the forecast, City staff will be flooding the ice rink to build a strong ice base getting ready for some winter fun.  During this time we ask for your help and for the safety of all skaters, please stay off the ice rink while we work to build up a great ice surface.  The City of Carver wants to make the Community Park rink an enjoyable experience for everyone. Once we have a good sheet of ice ready, we will post signs around the rink and on social media.

Remember, Check the City’s website for the announcement of when you can grab your skates and head to Community Park outdoor ice rink. The ice skating rink and warming house is open throughout the winter months and is available for public use during open hours –

Weekdays: 3:30pm-9:30pm and Weekends: 9:00am-9:30pm.

The City of Carver has many beautiful floodplain areas.  The undisturbed river bottoms and creeks provide a wide range of benefits to the people and natural systems.

These areas provide breeding and feeding grounds for fish and wildlife, create an enhanced waterfowl habitat, and protect habitats for rare and endangered species.  They provide open space and aesthetic pleasure in areas for active and passive users.  They also provide flood storage and conveyance, and reduce flood velocities and flood peaks.

Although the City has a storm sewer and drainage maintenance program, it is impossible to keep all drainage systems clear at all times.  As a citizen, you can assist by keeping the banks, ditches, and streams clear of brush and debris, and not allow grass clippings, oil, or other contaminants in the storm sewer inlets.  Dumping of debris into ditches and streams is a major cause of local drainage problems, and is a violation of City of Carver regulations.
