The Carver Lions will be hosting a drive-through pork chop dinner on Saturday, September 19.

The Lions will be serving from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.  Orders will be taken on 4th Street with pick up in front of City Hall on Broadway.

The Carver Car Show will be held Saturday, September 12, 2020, on Broadway Street in downtown Carver.  Click on the attached flyer for more details.

There will be no regular parking on Broadway during the Car Show event.  Please park on side streets overnight Friday and during the event.

This is a joint effort with the Carver Steamboat Days Committee, the Carver Lions Club, and sponsors Carver Automotive and Napa Auto Parts.

Unfortunately, due to a printing error, the “Sewer” fee on your September bill did not print on your statement, however, the total amount due is calculated correctly.

We apologize for any inconvenience that this may have caused.  To request a copy of your September bill showing the printed sewer fee, please send an email to [email protected] or call 952-448-8729.

Beginning September 8, 2020, crews will begin work at the east entrance of the Carver Bluffs Development (County Road 40/Main Street and Carver Bluffs Parkway).  During this time, residents will be asked to use the west entrance to the development at Jonathan Carver Parkway/Carver Bluffs Parkway.

The entrance at County Road 40/Main Street is anticipated to be closed until the end of September.  If you have any questions, you can contact Michael Jabs at 612-269-9970.

The Steamboat Days Committee recently announced the cancellation of Steamboat Days 2020 due to COVID-19. The Carver Lions are coordinating the following events in place of the typical Steamboat Days activities:

City Wide Garage Sales – September 11 and 12.  Watch for signs!

Grass clippings from lawns can be an asset to your lawn and garden or a detriment to your lawn, lakes and rivers. The key is when they are cut and where they go after they are cut.

Grass clippings are a valuable source of nutrients for the lawn. Clippings must be 1” in length or less to easily fall back to the soil and decompose quickly. Adding these clippings to the soil can improve your soil’s organic matter and health.  Grass clippings longer than 1” may stay on the lawn looking unsightly and smothering the grass below.  These longer clippings should be removed and either composted at your home or taken to the compost center.

Since getting shorter clippings means mowing your lawn more, you could consider reseeding your lawn with a “low mow” grass. Low mow grass mixes are a mix of slow growing fescues. Fescues are slower growing, drought and shade tolerant with finer, softer leaves.  You can reseed a traditional lawn with fescue seeds if you reframe from irrigating the lawn, the fescues will outcompete the existing grass over time.

There is a myth floating about that leaving grass clippings on the lawn contributes to thatch on the lawns. It doesn’t. Thatch is a layer of undecomposed organic matter that builds up between the soil surface and the actively growing green grass. Thatch appears if organic matter is being produced faster than it is being decomposed by micro-organisms.  This is caused by excessive nitrogen fertilizing, infrequent mowing and low soil oxygen.

Clippings can make great mulch around plants in annual or vegetable gardens. Mulching helps reduce weeds, conserves moisture, and modifies soil temperatures. Do not apply more than 1 or 2 inches of grass clippings at one time and do not use grass clippings as mulch if the lawn was recently treated with an herbicide for dandelions or other broadleaf weeds.

Where clippings should never be left is on your driveway, street or sidewalk. Clippings on these hard surfaces will wash off with the next rain and flow into the nearest lake, river or pond. Instead of adding fertilizer to your lawn, washed away grass clippings will add nutrients to lakes and rivers, causing algae growth.  Always be sure to sweep or blow grass clippings back off hard surfaces and back on to the lawn.  Your lakes, rivers and lawns will thank you.

Filing for City Council Seats – The terms of Councilmembers Joy McKnight and Kristy Mock will expire at the end of 2020. Candidate filings for these positions will be accepted at City Hall (316 Broadway) from Tuesday, July 28, 2020, through Tuesday, August 11, 2020. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with the exception of Tuesday, August 11, 2020, when City Hall will be open until 5:00 p.m. If you are not bringing your own affidavit of candidate filing form that is already notarized, please call ahead to make sure a notary is available.  The filing is not valid unless the form is notarized and the $2.00 filing fee is paid.
