Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge 40th Anniversary Celebration Oct. 8

Minnesota-Valley-National-Wildlife-Refuge (1) Stretching for 72 miles intermittently along the Minnesota River in the Twin Cities area from Fort Snelling to Henderson, the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge is an urban oasis for nature and nature lovers alike. The more than 14,000 acres are managed by the U.S. (Read more…) Fish & Wildlife Service, which also oversees the Minnesota Valley Wetland Management District that spans another 14 Minnesota counties.

The refuge is celebrating its 40th anniversary on Saturday, Oct. 8, 2016—the same date it was established by Congressional Order in 1976—with a public celebration that coincides with National Wildlife Refuge Week. Events will be held at the Bloomington Education and Visitor, 3815 American Blvd. East in Bloomington. The day-long celebration will include family-friendly and hands-on activities such as birding, exploration, fishing, hiking and more.

“Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge is one of Minnesota’s best kept secrets. It provides Twin Cities residents access just minutes from their homes to a wilderness area where they can take advantage of free outdoor recreational experiences that include biking, fishing, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, hiking, bird watching and hunting,” said Tim Bodeen, Refuge Manager. “Featuring a variety of habitats—including lakes, marshes, prairies, oak savannas and floodplain forests—the Refuge offers endless inspiration to artists and nature photographers alike.”

While initially established to provide valuable habitat for migratory birds—including waterbirds, wading birds, waterfowl and passerines—the reserve now serves as a key site in Minnesota for monarch butterfly conservation efforts. It is located less than 10 miles from downtown Minneapolis, making it one of only 17 refuges across the country designated as an Urban Wildlife Refuge. The Bloomington Education and Visitor Center is a one-quarter mile walk from the Metro Blue Line’s American Boulevard 34th Avenue Station and Platform.

The refuge plans to add additional activities to continue the year-long celebration to commemorate its anniversary. To learn more, visit fws.gov/refuge/minnesota_valley/, call 952-854-5900 or find the refuge on social media at @MNvalleyNWR or facebook.com/MNvalleyNWR.

Benton7Clean Water July Tip: Don’t rake grass clippings and leaves into the street.

Leave them on your lawn, use them for compost or bag them up. (Read more…) Left in the street, they get washed into storm drains and nearby lakes and rivers and cause algae blooms. Mulched on the lawn, they add natural fertilizer and help keep your grass healthy!

Many cities get questions regarding green ponds. While they are indeed green, it may be duckweed and not algae. Read this article  to clear up some of that confusion, and to learn how duck weed is important to clean water.

Rivals Tryouts August 9 – Youth Softball Players Wanted

rivalsbanner2

The Rivals is a Chaska Youth Softball Association supported program that is based in Chaska, with teams at the 14U and 18U levels. The teams will consist of players primarily from the Chaska High School boundaries, however, players and families from surrounding communities may be interested and are welcome. (Read more…) The goal of the Rivals program is to provide a community based team at the highest level of play possible. The teams will be formed with players with the experience and skill level to compete against “A” or club level teams. It is a great alternative for players that do not want to make the year round commitment to a club team, but do want to play competitively. The teams will be managed by hired and experienced coaches and be given personal and skill developmental opportunities during the off season.

The Rivals teams will play in the fall ball and summer leagues, and participate in off season clinics at Pitch2Pitch. We are looking for players that will be dedicated, but we will do our best to be flexible during the off season to accommodate the multi-sport players. During the primary softball season players are expected to make softball their priority sport and are expected to attend all practices and games.

Registrations are now open for the 14U and 18U Rivals team tryouts to take place on August 9 at Chaska Community Park. Check in for the 18U tryouts will be at 3:30 with tryouts taking place from 4:00-5:30. Check in for the 14U tryouts will be at 5:30 with tryouts taking place from 6:00-8:30. Players that are eligible to tryout must meet the following age requirements:

18U: Age 18 and under on January 1, 2017

Players that make the team will be required to complete a team registration and pay registration fees at that time. An installment plan will be available. The registration fees are as follows:
