Local Newspapers

This website was launched in 2010 with the aim of increasing the availability of local information on the internet. Over the past 14 years, it has gathered news from local sources and has notably been the publisher of the “Villager Tower” newsletter by Ricki Schultz, as well as “Historic Carver on the Minnesota River”, a book by John von Walter.

The three of us are united in a simple desire to publish information, historical or current. My personal interest is in historical preservation – a real problem in the digital age.

With the news of Southwest News Media shutting down, it appears we are at risk of losing our local newspapers. I will be taking action to personally preserve digital content from swnewsmedia.com to reduce the risk of the digital content being lost forever.

The role that Carver Current has to play going forward is not clear to me. It has always been less engaging than platforms such as Facebook and Nextdoor, where I believe most people get their local news.

I plan to continue hosting local content on this site. If you share our goals of publishing and preserving local information on the internet and would like to contribute in some way, please reach out.

Site Updates

Greetings, fellow citizens of Carver. I’ve spent some time updating the site today.

Now days, I haven’t had as much time to spend here as I used to, and as a result I sometimes get behind on posting things, or on cleaning up spam. Lately, I’ve noticed the site filling up with celebrity gossip and national and international news. I’m sorry about that. I’ve cleaned up some of it, and I made some changes that will hopefully stop it.

Also, I fixed twitter integration! Follow Carver Current on twitter @ https://twitter.com/carvercurrent!

This site was started 8 years, 4 kids, and 3 jobs ago. It’s a labor of love, but I have a long time before I’ve caught up with Ricki who’s been writing Villager Tower since 1983! I won’t embarrass Ricki by mentioning my age in 1983 (hey, I _was_ alive at least)…

Hope all is well. I can be found at [email protected] if you have any questions or comments.

Carver Current Server Upgraded

For the last year I’ve been hosting Carver Current out of a server in my home. This has been convenient and worked well for the most part.

Recently I migrated to a different server in my house, and since then, I’ve had about 5 days of downtime and significantly slower response times.

In order to increase speed and reliability, I have migrated the site again to a virtual server in a data center. Hopefully this will really improve things for everyone. Thanks for reading!

Win $25 to Harvey’s

I’ve created Carver Current as a place for people to use to exchange information, ideas, and opinions.

So far we have been quite successful. Traffic to the site is growing, and more people are viewing every story that is published. The problem is that I didn’t create this site to give myself a soap box. I created this site to give you a soapbox.

To that end, I’ve purchased a $25 gift certificate to Harvey’s. Between now and March 31st, anyone who participates in the dialog on Carver Current will be entered into the drawing. I will draw the winner and drop the gift certificate in the mail on April 1st.

There are many ways to participate! Buy, sell, or give away something in the Carver Classifieds. Local businesses may also advertise in the Classifieds. You could leave a comment in a story, or you could visit with us on Facebook!

Additionally, if you have a question, idea, or critique on how this site can better serve you or your organization, please contact us privately or publicly via the forum.

Good luck!

New Site Feature: Carver Forums

There is still a bit of work to do, but I am happy to announce the new Carver Forums.

The Carver Forums will be the heart of Carver Current. It is a place for people to express their views and personalities. We will moderate to ensure a fair and civil environment. In short, lively discussions are encouraged, but personal attacks, insults, and profanity are prohibited. This is necessary on the internet where anyone can say whatever crosses their mind anonymously.

I’ve been working on the forum policy in terms of moderation, but it still needs quite a bit of work. You can see the current policy here. Feedback is encouraged.

To start off the classifieds section, I have listed some used books that I am giving away. If you would like some of them, please post what you want in the thread so that I can remove them from the list.

The other available forums are Introductions, General, Local Politics, and Weather. If you have any ideas or feedback for the Carver Forums or Carver Current, you could leave it in the Site Feedback forum.

Please go to the forum, say something, and tell a friend!

Introducing Carver Current

I thought it may be time to do a proper introduction of myself and this site.

I’m Dan Rue and I live in Carver with my wife Tina. We were both raised in Chaska. After college we got married and bought a house on Riesgraf Road. We love this city, and especially our neighbors over on Riesgraf.

Carver Current was created to fill a need that I had personally – What is going on in Carver? What is the City up to? Are there any events this weekend? Too often I will drive through downtown on a Saturday and be surprised that there is a car show or craft fair. Besides community events, I want to know more about local political candidates, I want to hear about volunteer opportunities, and I would love to hear what other people think about these things.

To that end, I am building a platform for Carver to contribute and exchange ideas, opinions, and information. All content is contributed by local individuals, and will always be available freely to everyone.

Behind the scenes, I have been meeting other local people who are interested in helping this come together. Over the next few weeks and months, I will be announcing more site content and additional site features.

To get this going, I need help! Please considering “liking” Carver Current on Facebook. By “liking” Carver Current, you will see our stories on your wall. This is a great way to view our content, and it is a great means of advertising to your friends.

Secondly, if you have any ideas or would like to help build this community, please contact me.
